The word ‘Pujab’ is made up of two Persian words “Panj”
and “Aab” Panj means five and Aab means water. The state
is divided into three regions by its great rivers. The
Majha north of river Beas, the Doaba sandwiched between
the rivers Satluj and Beas and Malwa South of the Satluj
river. Lying north of west of India, Punjab had to take
a lot of battle ring from the invaders, the Persians,
Mauryans, Scythians, Parthians, Kushan and then the Mughals.
The Sikh faith, which played a decisive role in the creation
of the Punjabi –speaking state came into being the 15th
and 16th centuries. It was founded as a new
religions order by Guru Nank and was followed by nine
Gurus. With the partition of India, it was divided into
East and West between Pakistan and India.
Punjab
has an amazing wealth of tourist destination. Punjab is a
travellers dream, a gourmets paradise, a shoppers delight, a
sportsman’s inspiration, a musicians mecca, a dancers delight.
It is the land of piligrimage, archaeological digs, places,
museums and historical sites. Sword arm of India, Punjab is
the freedom fighters home
